The Oviedo High School NJROTC Unit began in 1993 under the leadership of Col. Joseph Nardo. It has been a distinguished school program with academic honors for twenty-five consecutive years.  This recognition is awarded to only 10% of the over 600 schools which participate in the NJROTC national program. The Oviedo unit is nationally ranked among the best. Many of our teams and individual cadets have received state and national honors for their accomplishments. The Marksmanship team earned the title of “Navy National Marksmanship Champions” for 2013.

Our Unit continues to grow with over 130 cadets for this upcoming 2021 – 2022 school year. The curriculum has been carefully prepared by educational specialists in the Navy and includes modern naval subjects and materials.  Rooks  (1st year participants) and cadets learn about naval history, electronics, navigation, oceanography, astronomy, leadership and basic seamanship. The unit is honored to have two qualified instructors who completed their active duty careers in the Navy, Lieutenant Commander Harry Haverkamp and Master Chief Louis Jones.

As a Naval Science program, we have created a fleet of ships to reach our destination. Those ships are: Scholarship, Leadership, Citizenship and Friendship.

Our Motto is “Leadership by Example” which our NJROTC instructors, staff, cadets and booster club exemplify each day.
